The Flower District is a nonprofit dedicated to bringing solace, joy, and healing to neighbors in need throughout Rhode Island by recycling flowers and supporting the local floral economy through job training initiatives.
The organization grows, rescues, and donates more than 100,000 flowers each year, with plans to expand to 300,000 annual donations within the next five years. These flowers are distributed free of charge through a network of local nonprofits, community groups, and service organizations that support Rhode Islanders at risk, including hospitals, senior services, recovery centers, shelters, hospices, and food pantries.
Health & Wellness
Participating in gardening activities encourages physical activity and outdoor engagement, which in turn supports overall physical well-being.
Education & Skill Development
The gardens provide opportunities for individuals to learn about gardening, eco-friendly practices, and environmental science in an accessible and engaging way.
As of January 2024, the organization has welcomed more than 1,500 volunteers through its doors in just six short years. During that time, it has also diverted over 10 tons of compostable waste from the landfill. With continued community support, the team is on track to give away more than 15,000 bouquets—over 150,000 stems.
This year, as they prepare for the final capping process on their brownfield site, they are excited to begin creating an outdoor amphitheater, laying the foundation for a larger barn, and opening the property more fully for the benefit of the community.
